Connect the Dots 4: Celts,
Runes, Tree Rings, and Chocolate |
Vibrant color, unusual shapes, and energetic best describe my woven tapestries. I combine traditional tapestry techniques and ancient symbols with contemporary designs to create a mystical image. The symbolic language of my shapes develops from four primary influences: a love of color, a former career as a scientist, an interest in the symbollism from original cultures, and the harmony I experience surrounded by nature. Weaving tapestries is a slow and meditative art form. Small format tapestries, less then 10 inches square, take two months to weave. A tapestry measuring 2 feet by 6 feet may require 6 months to a year...or longer. A recent commission required 9 months to complete. Weaving on my loom can best be described as gently picking the strings of a harp and laying in wool to create the melody. I dye Australian / New Zealand wool yarn to achieve the intense color palette for the weft, the yarn that creates the design element. The warp, which provides the structure for the tapestry, is either Irish linen or Finnish cotton. |
